COYHAIQUE
The Fishing
If you are here, you are searching
for trout fishing in Chilean Patagonia. Let me help on that, one of
the best areas to fish Chile is Coyhaique, famous round the globe because
of the diverse waters, from spring creeks to large rivers, lagoons and
lakes. Browns and Rainbows trouts are the specialty of the area, but
you can spect King Salmon RUN. Us you know FFTR always look for the
finest services and fishing, Coyhaique Expeditions is one of that programs
where you can expect over 20 years of experience on fishing the area.
I´ve been personally fishing with these operation years long with the
confidence to fish in secure places and can insure that you can left
Chile with the best personal record Brown trout from this trip.
Believe me, these are my preferred waters for trout fishing in Chile.
Lodge
Two fishing lodges, distant 80
miles one from the other, the first one Encantado Lodge just 30 minutes
drive from Balmaceda Airport in central region and the other Rodeo Los
Palos at the of Coyhaique city. Base on that accommodations you can
fish almost one half of the 2,814 square miles of the region. Just count
that this part of Chilean Patagonia have 2,6 habitant per square mile.
That’s solitude.
Every thing you need, from raft and drift botes to the always welcome
float tubes for the trophy browns lagoons.
Like is common in Chile, at the end of the fishing day you can expect
a well served Pisco Sour.
Recommended Equipment
As water levels and fishing conditions
vary, throughout the season, recommended equipment does as well.
At spring time, with high water levels and volume, and in autumn, with
the in lake run of Browns, the suggested equipment consists of:
-Rods: Single Hand rods for lines #3 to 8, mid action to fast of 9 feet
of length or more.
-Fly Lines: WF floating line, and extra fast sinking shooting tapers
with shooting line 0.29 or monofilament (Amnesia or similar) of 20 lbs.
There is a great variety of lines in the market like WF sinking Type
6 or 8 that works very well, but if I had to choose a line, I would
select Shooting Taper, it never fails. 100/150 yds backing 20 lbs.
Clear intermediate for November to December.
-Leaders & tippets: For sinking lines, 5 to 7,5 ft from 10 to 15
lbs. of resistance. For floating lines, 9 to 12 ft. from 5 to 10 lbs
for tests rainbow trouts.
-Some Flies:
Streamers: Bunnies and Zonkers, tan, olive, black and white, Muddlers.
Hair Minnows. Matukas and Sculpins. Bitch Creeks: Crystal Buggers, black,
brown and olive. Hair Tubes. Don’t Forget articulated egg sucking leech.
Dry Flies: Foam Attractors, Hair Caddis & Stones, Stimulators, Wulffs,
Adams. #8 to #14.
Nymphs: Prince, Ph.Tail, Hare's Ear, Montana, Copper John, Emergers
and Hackles Soft. #8 to # 14.
Recommended Fly Fishing Gear
Hat: Hats keep faces from being sun burned and shade the eyes for better
vision.
Polarized Sunglasses: Polarized sunglasses allow an angler to see into
the water and also help remove the suns glare from the waters surface,
allowing anglers to see their flies easier.Polarized glasses also protect
eyes from harsh sunlight and inadvertent casts.
Sunscreen: Don't forget to put this on.
Body Wear:
Summer : Start with a lightweight long sleeve shirt, preferably a quick dry material. Be prepared to layer with a sweatshirt or fleece jacket for cool mornings and evenings. Have a rain jacket for occasional summer thunderstorm. Quick dry shorts are perfect for wet wading on hot summer days. Quick dry pants work well also and protect legs from the sun and bushes.
Cold weather ( spring/autumn ): fleece pant to wear under waders throughout
the season. Heavy socks are a must as feet are constantly submerged
when fishing. A warm sock will be more comfortable when wet wading as
well.
Camera: We highly recommend disposable, water proof cameras, available
at the shop. Use the digital camera when not in the water.
Fingerless Gloves: Whether they are fleece or wool, fingerless gloves
keep hands plenty warm and keep sensitive fingers in touch with the
line and rod.
Waders: Breathable waders will let your sweat evaporate and keep you
warmer than the much more restrictive neoprene.
